Zellers is adding two Ontario stores as the revived Canadian retailer moves into the next phase of its comeback: testing whether nostalgia and brand familiarity can translate into repeat visits, value credibility and a viable smaller-format department-store model.
The company announced Wednesday that it will open a 25,000-square-foot standalone store at 80 Orfus Rd. in Toronto’s North York district on June 18, followed by a store at Tecumseh Mall in Windsor in July. The openings follow Zellers’s October 2025 debut at Londonderry Mall in Edmonton, which the company says exceeded expectations and helped validate demand for the brand’s return.
The Ontario expansion builds on the “Zellers 3.0” strategy reported on last fall, when the retailer outlined plans for a smaller, more curated department-store model built around value, family shopping and a more flexible retail footprint.
Two markets, two brand tests
The new locations show how Zellers is trying to balance nostalgia with a more contemporary retail proposition.

Tecumseh Mall gives the brand a direct heritage play, with the company describing the Windsor opening as a return to a location Zellers once called home. The Orfus Road location (rendering pictured), meanwhile, is a standalone store in a Toronto retail corridor known for value and outlet shopping, giving the brand a different kind of test market.
Why marketers should care
For marketers, the expansion is notable because Zellers is entering the harder phase of a nostalgia-led relaunch. Based on the Edmonton launch, the brand reports it has initially proven it can attract attention, whereas the Ontario openings will help show whether that affection can be converted into continuing store traffic, category credibility and a differentiated role in a crowded value-retail market.
Three things worth watching for:
- Nostalgia is the hook, not the whole strategy: Zeddy and other heritage cues help reintroduce the brand, but the bigger test is whether shoppers respond to the updated assortment and store experience.
- The format is still being tested: Edmonton gave Zellers its first proof point in a larger former Hudson’s Bay space, while the 25,000-square-foot Toronto store falls within the smaller 20,000-to-50,000-square-foot range the retailer has identified for future locations. That makes the Ontario expansion a more direct test of whether the new Zellers concept can work beyond its initial launch market.
- The brand is still learning in public: Zellers says feedback from Edmonton has shaped merchandising and the in-store experience for future locations.
Zellers says the Ontario stores will feature expanded assortments in home, apparel, toys, seasonal goods and licensed products, along with Zellers-branded merchandise and nostalgic in-store moments.
In the June 3 release, COO Joey Benitah said customer response in Edmonton has shaped how the company is approaching its next phase, from category selection to how it delivers value and discovery in-store. Zellers says it remains in active discussions with landlords across the country and expects to announce more locations in Ontario and beyond over the coming year.
